NEW CLASS February 2009 Media Literacy

Welcome to English 12, one and all! We are starting our search for enlightement and enrichment with a look at ancient literature--Beowulf, read in Old English by Yours Truly; Chaucer's Prologue to the Canterbury Tales, read in Middle English by Y.T.; and finally, the first paragraph of Melville's Moby Dick, read also by Y.T. A quick scan of how the English language evolved, and we're on to What Makes the News! We looked at what is in the newspaper, what types of articles catch our interest, and what the author's purpose is.

Your homework is to create a mini newspaper or magazine with your own slant or bias! What is important to you? What is your purpose? To inform, persuade, satirize, etc. We will be looking at
another medium very soon--television and film. That will take us into the wild world of Orwell and totalitarian control through the use of language and mass media.

See you Monday!
